In 2009, 10-year-old Hollie Steel shocked Britain’s Got Talent judges in the most delightful way.
As the young girl was interviewed by the show’s hosts backstage in her leotard and tutu, with her hair pulled back into a bun, they joked with her about what talent she was going to put on display. Magician? No, she giggled. Juggler? Nope.
It was obviously ballet dancing.
Or was it?
When she got onto the stage to introduce herself, the audience was braced for some killer moves.
But when the elementary school student from Accrington, England began her routine to the song “I Could Have Danced All Night,” from the musical My Fair Lady, she looked like any other 10-year-old with a couple of years of lessons under her belt.
Some simple hops and twirls clearly had judges wondering how she even managed to get a live audition.
It wasn’t the kind of talent level you normally see at this point. Sure, she was adorable, but there was just nothing special about her dancing.
Judge Simon Cowell, who has proved he’s not afraid to hurt a young performer’s feelings, brushed her off not long into her performance.
But everyone was shocked as Hollie stopped dancing and started singing along to the song.
And her voice is incredible!
Cowell’s face changed from bored to bug-eyed in a matter of seconds.
It was clear everyone was awestruck by Steel’s surprise talent.
NOW we know how she made it through to the televised rounds – she’s actually a spectacular singer.
It was not only fun to watch Steel perform but to see the judges’ and audience’s reactions as well. Even after it was clear this was no dance routine, they continued to be awestruck by her perfect pitch.
In the end, Hollie got a standing ovation from the entire auditorium for her wonderful performance.
With the audience won over, it was now time for the judges to assess the performance and deliver their verdict on whether or not Hollie could advance to the next round.
Amanda Holden was up first and was clearly blown away:
“It’s just ridiculous how much talent you have. The voice that came out of you I was stunned at.”
Piers Morgan was impressed as well:
“We’ve seen lots of children on this show in three series now. I have never heard any of them sing as well as you.”
Next, it was Cowell’s turn. Originally unhappy – and quite visibly – with Hollie’s dance routine in the beginning, he leveled some criticisms first.
“I didn’t like what you were wearing because you came over as just a typical little girl who wants to be a ballerina. I wasn’t crazy about the song…”
But the girl’s talent was so overwhelming that you could hear groans as the other judges rolled their eyes.
Just get to the praise already – we know it’s coming!
Finally, Simon said:
“Then I heard you sing – and I think Hollie you’ve got a fantastic voice.”
Everyone in the audience cheered as Steel was given the go-ahead to move on to the next round.
Hollie not only achieved her dream of performing on stage, but in just one day news of her surprise performance spread and a YouTube video of her audition got over 1 million views! While there are many versions around, the one below now has well over 3 million.
Scroll down to watch the whole performance – we promise it’s one you don’t want to miss.
Even knowing the surprise “twist,” you’ll still be shocked to hear this young girls’ voice.
Ans you won’t be surprised to know that Hollie is still performing to this day after eventually coming in 6th place on the 3rd season of the show.
