Melanie Bell and Jamie Gilpin – known simply as Mel and Jamie – were an unlikely pair to make it to the final round of Britain’s Got Talent. After all, it’s pretty rare to see a mother and son performing together!
In fact, the amazing duo was originally meant to be a solo act.
Jamie earned an audition on Britain’s Got Talent but as the date approached, he didn’t feel like he could do it on his own. His mother had been offering support and training all along – Mel is a professional singer – and so naturally she was happy to support her son.
The 44-year-old mother provided harmonies and wanted to be very careful not to upstage her son. After all, it was his shot at stardom.
But when the two took the stage, what could have been an awkward and cheesy mother-son performance opened up the floodgates for audience members and judges alike.
There were some serious tears in the house that night as they not only put on a great performance but looked at each other with such love that it no doubt made most people want to call their moms after the show.
Surprisingly, Mel and Jamie haven’t been singing together for very long – just a few short weeks – but their voices work perfectly together and it’s clear that talent runs in the family.
This performance is so special because it shows how strong a bond these two have with each other.
The 2013 song “Say Something” by A Great Big World is technically a breakup ballad in which one member of the couple asks for another chance. But when it was re-released with Christina Aguilera later that year, it took on a slightly different meaning, with one singer acting as the ghost of a loved one. It wasn’t too much of a stretch to see the song as one of regret between a mother and son.
And if the number of tissues the audience went through is any indication, they made it work.
As Jamie starts off, the 15-year-old looks quite young and nervous and it takes a minute for him to show the audience what he’s really got.
But as he sings the lyrics “Say something, I’m giving up on you,” the crowd goes wild.
Even Simon Cowell – a notoriously unflappable judge – looks enchanted.
In fact, the entire judging panel looks equal parts impressed and emotional.
Many of the commenters on the video that’s been viewed over 12 million times were reminded of their own mothers. And it clearly struck a chord for those who have lost their moms.
Commenters were also quick to point out not only the special bond between the two but Mel’s incredible voice – one that she was clearly using just to augment her son’s vocals instead of using it to take center stage.
Even Mel herself was emotional after the performance.
After their incredible audition, Mel and Jaimie moved on to the next round where they performed Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb,” followed by the famous mother-daughter hit “Love Can Build A Bridge” by The Judds in the finals.
While the pair came in 12th place in the 2017 competition, their phone was ringing off the hook for months with opportunities to sing all over the world afterward.
But Mel pointed out that any gigs would have to be scheduled around her son’s education.
