Being a good tipper is always a great attribute. In fact, it’s almost worth putting it on to your resume. But this woman got a terrible shock, all thanks to being generous.
Most people know that, when you’re tipping in the USA, 20% is the customary amount to leave. Anything higher, and you’re being very generous.
Most waiters that get 20% tips are more than pleased with their customer’s kindness. But one waitress received a higher percentage tip and still took advantage of her customer’s generosity.
Whitney Anderson is a hard-working mother of three. She, her husband and their kids went out to a Mexican restaurant one day.
The service was good, and the waitress seemed nice. So Anderson left a $10 tip in a $45.50 meal, coming out to above 20%. She paid by card.
But the next day, when Anderson checked her bank account, she discovered something shocking.
The restaurant had debited $65.50 from her bank. Clearly, someone at the restaurant had thought that she wouldn’t notice if they took even more money from her.
But Anderson wasn’t going to stand for anyone stealing from her.
After work, Anderson went to the restaurant. She was able to talk to the owner. But he didn’t seem to care at all.
Eventually, he agreed to give Anderson back the money, but it would take 10 business days.
But Anderson was not satisfied with this. She had not taken the customer copy of the receipt home with her. So she demanded that the owner show her the merchant copy of the receipt. That was when she discovered how it had all happened.
All that the owner could find was the customer copy of the receipt, which Anderson had left blank. But someone had filled out this copy.
They had written in a tip for $20 and badly forged Anderson’s signature. Clearly, the waitress had decided to throw the merchant copy away and use this receipt to get more money from Anderson.
Outraged, Anderson took to Facebook to alert everyone.
“I’m so angry that a server did this and who knows how many times she’s done this and stole money from customers,” she wrote.
Many people in Anderson’s town looked into the last time they had been to that restaurant. Some of them were able to see that they too had been overcharged.
Now, with mounting pressure, the manager finally said that he would look into the situation. The manager called up the waitress’s previous employers. He discovered that they had all fired the waitress because she was stealing in one way or another.
In the end, the manager of the restaurant issued a full apology and refund to Anderson. He also removed the waitress from his business.
Many people can learn a lot from what Anderson went through. Lots of people don’t bother to fill out or take their customer receipts after they’re done with their meal. Most people that work in restaurants are honest, but a few, like the waitress in this story, show that everyone has to be careful.
And of course, you need to keep a close eye on your bank account activity.
And for people that manage a restaurant, the message is clear: always contact your new employee’s references to ensure that they are honest, hard-working people!
